Super Awesome Healing Balm

This is an older post that has been brought back from my archives… it was originally written in 2022.

The New Year is nearly here and so many of us are making plans to be a bit more prepared and/or self-sustaining in our homes… If you are wanting to beef up your wellness kit and even first-aid preparedness, this might be a great addition to your home!

My Super Awesome Healing Balm is something that I’ve been excited about for quite some time and I’m actually in the process of making it while I write this recipe out. There are quite a few variations that can be made to this and the next time I make it, I might make some changes, but I will share the basic recipe and then some suggestions for adapting this.

I use this for bumps, bruises, scrapes, cuts, dry skin, rashes, etc… It’s great for adults, children, babies, fur babies… This is why I call it “Super Awesome” - because it’s great for so many ailments and the benefits are quickly noticeable.

Ingredients:

Avocado Oil - I chose Avocado Oil over Olive Oil because it has a longer shelf life, though either of these high fat content oils would be terrific.

Calendula Flowers (dried) - Calendula has long been known to be anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, and great for wounds, skin conditions, etc… for some great information about it, check out this article by Dr. Axe where he really breaks it down!

Lavender Flowers (dried) - Lavender, whether used as a dried flower or an essential oil, has long been recognized for it’s calming and relaxing properties, but if you’ll check out this article from the National Library of Medicine NIH, you’ll quickly realize that there is A LOT more to this incredible flower than most people realize. I’m using it in this recipe because of it’s skin soothing benefits.

Beeswax - I’m specifically using beeswax because I need something to thicken this concoction into more of a salve/balm consistency, but of course there are more benefits to beeswax than that of a thickener! Beeswax has long been recognized for it’s various therapeutic properties and is thought to be particularly effective in healing bruises, inflammation and burns. The naturally antimicrobial properties of beeswax have also been shown to be very effective for more serious skin infections. Check out this PubMed article for all the details!

Essential Oils* - Copaiba, Frankincense, Helichrysum… you could also add German Chamomile, Lavender, Manuka, Melrose, Myrhh, Owie Blend, Roman Chamomile, Tea Tree, or Ylang Ylang… the possibilities are endless!!! If you’d like to know why I chose to use Copaiba, Frankincense, & Helichrysum in this batch, make sure to keep an eye on my February 2021 Class Schedule!

*I only use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils. Please do not use other essential oils and expect similar results. I cannot speak to the safety of any other essential oils.

Gallon Mason Jars

Tins, Small Jars for sharingTHIS is a cool option and generous size. I like to keep a couple tins of this in my refrigerator and like to make little gifts of this for friends and family. What could be better than beautifully packaged wellness gifts?!

Sourcing:

Azure Standard is my favorite source for high quality, non-gmo, organic products at a very reasonable price. For this project, I purchased my Avocado Oil, Beeswax, and Mason Jars from them. Azure Standard sources everything they sell from small, family owned farms and businesses and does monthly local deliveries (likely in your area too). If you have not checked out Azure Standard to see if they deliver to your area, do yourself a favor and explore their site!

Bulk Herb Store is where I purchased the Calendula and Lavender Flowers for this project. I was so impressed with the quality products from this business! I find the quality from sources like Amazon to be really hit and miss… This Christian owned small business provides superior, clean sourced product that I trust, plus I REALLY like supporting smaller businesses.

Instructions:

  1. Pour the dried flowers into a large glass jar.

  2. Pour the avocado oil to fill the jar and soak the flowers for at least 4 weeks… 3 months would be better… That’s it for now! Now wait and let it soak! The longer the calendula & lavender soaks in the avocado oil, the more potent the balm will be! Some people soak theirs for years! Mine have been soaking for a few weeks, but I don’t plan to do the next steps until Valentine’s Day or even later!

  3. After at least 4 weeks, strain the flowers out, but keep the oil. If you do not intend to use your entire jar of oil, then only strain the amount you plan to use at this time. If you decide not to use all of the oil, you can top off the large mason jar with more avocado oil to continue soaking.

  4. Add the beeswax and avocado oil to a sauce pan and put it on low heat. Watch carefully and stir as the beeswax melts. I do not have an exact measurement for this, but more beeswax will produce a firmer balm.

  5. One the beeswax has fully melted, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool for a couple minutes.

  6. Add your essential oils. I will be adding a generous amount of Copaiba, Frankincense, & Helichrysum to mine. If I end up using the entire mason jar of oil, then I will add a full size bottle of each essential oil to this recipe. Feel free to adjust the essential oil quantity based on your oily needs!

  7. Carefully pour into containers.

It would be great to make a batch of this Super Awesome Healing Salve every year for your household and to share with your loved ones! This salve makes a wonderful gift! If you decide to make a batch of this, please comment below to let me know what essential oils you decide to use!
